I got going a little later then I expected, today... but got my oil changed, went to go pick up my Dad, and we were on our way.

I actually got him talking a little bit, few snippets here and there. We would feed off of external stimulus to find topics of discussion - a car that I'd see, would maybe lead to a story that he had. At one point I even asked him what he had to do in his younger days - "well, just hang out with my friends - go swimming, that was about it" (always ending with "that was about it"! I hate that, it cuts it short when I -know- there's more) I prodded a little more "well, most of the guys would just drink beer and race cars... but I really didn't drink all that much back then, I didn't like the taste"
All I was looking forward to was a good story about his wild days, when he did stupid shit too... I'm not going to go do it, he's not going to corrupt me, but he holds back like that. I never get to hear the good stuff until I hear him around old buddies or telling a story to a friend. Apparently I'm still not an adult, or at least that's the feeling I get from him.

It took about two hours to get there, not a bad drive really.
We saw his old farmhouse; they had a lot of land, it went up and down the road, both sides for miles.
We saw the rubble of the old mill that my father had fallen through the floor of. He was about 4 or 5, wandering in the old mill - the roof had rotten by then, the floors were just about. He fell through the floor up to his armpits before his brother pulled him out. It would have been a good 3 story drop into cold water, metal, and stone. All that remained in the rubble was the main arch, the overflow area, and the trench where the wheel once stood.
We saw my grandparents first house 3 bedroom, couple stories, lots of land... it cost them $700 in 1940.
He also showed me the road named after my great grandfather, my middle-name sake: Hanley. He was the Lt. Governor of NY -- in fact my grandfather and grandmother came to NY from Iowa because he (my great grandfather on my grandmother's side) got in to politics, and my father even got a few rides to school in his limousine out of it.

So I did learn a lot, we had gone there when I was much younger and because I had forgotten a lot of what he told me, I figured this would be a good time to go, when we could get some pictures and I could hear the stories again, but this time just him and I.

Tomorrow I don't have to work -- going on a sort of follow-up jaunt with my father to NY. I'm hoping that driving around his old stomping grounds will bring out some stories that I know he's got in there... he just can't recall very well unless he sees it, needs something to jar the memories loose.

My main objective in this endeavor is to be able to talk to my father in a 1 on 1 setting, maybe learn more about his past, and hopefully get some lessons from it without letting him know. He never really wanted to tell me why on a lot of things he'd say no to, but he never would go into detail, even when I asked. I knew he had his reasons, stories behind it, but for whatever reason he couldn't tell me.

I'm hoping he'll loosen up, be more comfortable with me as an adult... and maybe forget that he's mormon for a day. I blame a lot of the turmoil (divorce, adjusting at home) on his "converting" as it's the change that lead to all the other change, which eventually lead to the change of me moving out. It's like he denied his whole past because he wasn't living it as a mormon... as a good person should. .:sigh:.

Biography: Krang.

I don't know what I'm going to do with the mega-super-fighting-chicken-gigantica list of links that I accumulated last week. I never got time to post them so I have a very long list of semi-old stuff, maybe I'll just sort through it again and put the best of the best.

Today's theme: mini-thoughts

I've been making ice coffee @ work as of late. A movie cup (glow in the dark "Hulk" cup in this case) filled with ice plus a regular cup of coffee (with fake cream and sugar already mixed in hot) out of my trusty company mug. Now that's d e l i c i o u s!

It's really hot lately too -- I have yet to grab a brand new window fan (planned on buying several for the house). I'm thinking that now that it's 90+ they'll be sold out again if the demand is anywhere near what it was at this time last year.

I just heard a great album! It's by Infectious Grooves, a split-off project of the guys in Suicidal Tendencies. The singer, bassist and guitar player from Suicidal Tendencies hooked up with Stephen Perkins from Janes Addiction and voila! Funk-metal goodness!

I remember thinking my brother folly - about age 24-26 - for drinking Perier (water with lemon/lime essence). I couldn't figure how anyone could like it, you couldn't even taste the flavor, now here I am @ 22 sipping on the Poland Spring lime version and enjoying it thoroughly.

Yesterday I went to Providence -- the original plan was to go to Worcester, check out the hustle and bustle that pops up for summer.
I was hanging out with Laura, couldn't find anyone to go with us so she called some friends in Providence to meet us there. They'd already done a ton of driving over the weekend, so they weren't really up for the trek.
Almost to Worcester, and having nothing to really -do- in Worcester, we decided to drive on to Providence.

We went to her sorority sister's apt, where they're staying for the summer. Hung out for a bit, went to Brown University for a walk around... very nice. It's right in the center of the city, in the midst of concrete and tarmac. It's a very old campus, the buildings are all stone with giant pillars arches, and the common was bright green with luciuos turf. After being very obvious tourists we sat down for a bit to play 'Brown University Student'. It's just like sitting on the STCC common, except we pretended like we were a good 50 grand in debt. =]~

I found a shop, I think it was called "Oops" or "oop" or some surprised exclamation. I got some finger puppets (keep your eyes out once I get iChat AV for some original shorts) and an awesome wind up metal-geared thing. It wobbles and jumps around like a water-skipper (bug) on 4 thin metal rubber-tipped legs. I'll post the website with pictures.

It was ladies night, in that I was the only guy there. I was pre-occupied with fixing up the computer, so I was somewhat apart from the discussion. I just sat back, listened, and was surfing around while the girls drank beer, smoked, and ate pizza... except they were watching Monday night NBC - reality TV show after reality TV show. It was some Joe Millionaire (even looked like the same guy) show... didn't pay much attention. They didn't either, but would keep their ears open for interesting tidbits.

It was a relaxing evening, I had a lot of fun just watching females be themselves in a comfortable environment. We ended up wimping out and sleeping there - probably best not to be driving all tired.

We left in the morning, got home in about an hour but it took 30 minutes to get from the turnpike to home... a lot longer then normal with morning traffic. I made it home with just enough time to grab a shower then off to work.

I have to think of a new music page format, might just put up a list of the few "song blogs" that I have. One for rock, one for techno, and I'll eventually have one for hiphop - though hard coding it has worked so far. I have to be able to listen to a song a lot without it losing its novelty for it to make the list(s), and hiphop can lose it quite quickly. There are a few from 1999-2001 that remain my staples, still others that I'm absolutely sick of but haven't made it out of my collection yet. Usually I just rate them lower once I get sick of them and that's enough to not hear them.

Musicmatch and iTunes both support rating tracks, which is one of the greatest inventions ever. I can make a playlist that excludes any lower-rated tracks and include any that I haven't rated... just so I don't miss any. iTunes goes a step further to allow me to create a smart playlist - one that updates in real time as I rate/play tracks.
EX: I can create a playlist < 700mb (to fit on an MP3 cd) that has all my top-rated tracks, or the newest tracks, or the most/least played tracks... it's so flexible! =]

I wish I was home, could be fixing my network... making pretty graphics for the site... or even being outside -- no, wait - it's raining again... so scratch that.

Wanting to recommend a song of the moment got me on the whole music tiff -- Lynyrd Skynyrd - Comin' Home
I'd normally post on the music page, I guess under rock. I hate catagorizing music... it's so... open. Guitar = Rock so that makes it easy enough, I suppose. That is, unless it's synthesized... then that would be New Wave ;)

We're almost ready for the new design, it's updated... so check out the link from a few days ago.

The week's winding up again, it's Friday.

My friend just picked up her first real car - 2003 Ford Focus. No doubt a reasonable 4 cyl, but not bad for a first car =]
The good news is there'll be hopefully not as much running around when I want to hang out with her -- the bad news... I doubt I'll be chillin with her as much because she'll be busy running around seeing all the friends she hasn't been able to see because she doesn't have a car.

In studying a few hours of DHTML and Javascript this week, I feel like I'm back in the saddle. All it takes is a little refresher to catch up on the new stuff. Surprisingly not much has changed, I'm still looking at tutorials from 2001. When things were jumping from version 2 to 3 to 4... (IE/Netscape) things were completely changing all the time. You had to stay up and up or else the pages wouldn't work.

I finally coded it so it works with IE - but better with Mozilla. I still have to test out Safari @ home... see how it works, but the whole network is giving me issues. Satellite is up, but no other computer can get the internet access over the network. I can't get to the router config page... and didn't have that much time to fiddle with it to boot -- so until I can sit with it I'm probably out of luck.

I can do the code here and there on breaks, friends houses... but the good stuff (graphics, re-doing the old pages) will have to wait until I have full access. I'm reluctant to add the links to the other pages until they match. =]

I at least got the colors how I want them, windows the right sizes... and all the damn GoLive code out of there. It was a mess, couldn't even follow the proprietary coding it would generate. I may not be able to have moving windows and the like... but I doubt anyone used that anyway (music page, for example).

Just go ahead,
You'll be just fine

Ok -- weird.
As I'm coming in to work today I think I fell into a bit of a wormhole.

I get out of my car and am walking towards the building, notice the very fine mist raining down... I hear a girl screaming - "Noooooooooo! Noooo!" I get closer and there she is coming around the corner of the building. She had an empty leash in her hand, clad all in red vinyl with plastic "jelly shoes" heals. She had wild brown curly hair, and her face was covered in blotches of blush? eyeshadow? it was so haphazard, it could very well have been a medical condition. She was running as fast as she could (and faster then I'd imagine one would be able to in shoes like that) after this little "peanut" lookin' terrier. I cut him off, almost caught him first try - but he zigged, I zagged - and he went under the car. She came over and got on the other side. I was just telling her to round the front corner when he had already run off back towards the building again. She attempted to cut him off and I snatched him up once he veered back towards me. She ran over, out of breath and thankful to get her dog back. I helped her get the dog collar back on and she was gone, just walked around a car somewhere. She never said a word to me.

Ok - things have quieted down since... I'm a little bit more at ease.
Everything seems to come up all at once, a nice little wave that comes in every couple weeks or so.

I'll learn my little lesson from Finding Nemo - "...well, you can't never let anything happen to him. Then... nothing would ever happen to him." so with those words of wisdom I know that life is difficult when it's interesting. It can't really be interesting without being difficult - that's the challenge, right?

Nice little whirlwind -- wish = null/void, and had to try and express my feelings to boot.

I like dealing with emotional issues while attempting to do every day tasks, helps with the challenge.
...and then there's a call from my landlord about how they don't want the ex-housemate there: "we don't trust him".
Well I can guarantee there won't be any issues - the people you ought to be worried about is little-miss-troublesome's little friends.
Sketchy sketchy sketchy... and you're worried about people that I chose to live with? Why?

We're just trying to live our lives, same as anyone else -- and now our friends are not allowed over?
It all seems silly. Why worry? I put my reputation at stake, but that doesn't seem to be good enough.
You don't trust my word on that, why trust it on anything else?
No double standards, that's all a person can ask.

Waiiiiiiiiting... a mere one way or another will prove to be complete realization, or utter failure of 'said plan'. (*melodrama-meter*)
So you know those things that you totally know what you want, and it would be perfectly possible... but it's probably best left alone?
That's me... same tiff - one... way... or... another... but it's not up to me. I don't get to choose. I'm powerless, uniformed, until a kind soul enlightens me.
I've also had complications rise of a situation in the past - worked through said complications, and it turned out very nice. Eventually it ended up going dodo, but all not-as-good-as-you'd-like-them-to-be things must come to an end. Just as well, how to know if this isn't more of the same... same silly choice, same gut instinct, just - don't... know. I hopefully will know by the end of the day... if not I'm going to explode and look like a duff by asking.

.:side note:. 'said plan' isn't actually a plan, it's a wish... and a wish may not come true because wishes are for happiness, and if a wish conflicts with another, and renders the other wish in-effective, they're incompatible and thereby the wish can not proceed. The challenger wish always loses out to the "I've been here all along" wish.

That is all.
I wish I had a discussion board... and/or comments, but not sure if they're worth it.

Whew, mucho ponderation. I'm awake early on a Saturday - how'd that happen? =] Got home a little while ago, drove around for a bit. I ended up being back near home, called a few people - one dissapeared, haven't heard from Carissa in a long time. At least since Tom's funeral... her phone was disconnected, and her dad's house no longer had their name on the mailbox.
I tried to see if they were at least in the same town/area via 411 - but none in the local area, or even MA in general with said name. She had mentioned something about PA... going to college, but wasn't sure that would ever come.
I kinda feel bad, there's a few people that I've yet to chill with, from before I moved that I said I'd keep in touch. It's a far ways away and the few times I would invite people for a shindig - they never came... so at least I tried.

I spent a lot of time thinking how people interact.... some change around other people - some are used to direct one on one speaking... without multiple inputs and distractions. I'm just wondering if it's enough of an inconvenience to not want to stick my toes in it. It seems like it get's pretty deep in there... and though I don't mind getting a little wet - if everyone's going to drown, it's just not worth it. Two people on a lifeboat while the other freezes to death clinging to a door... that's just not right either.

How to keep the peace -- not get into the situation in the first place, understand that sometimes things just can't be for whatever reason, at least not now. I don't want to give up the chance, someone I've identified with and enjoy being around. There's pluses and minuses, I'm always dwelling on the pluses. Often it's too soon for the minuses - got to give those time to emerge, detect patterns, and see if it's going to cause an issue later on -- if the issue is worth more then the end reward, then it's probably not worth it. I'm still hoping the issue is very small, or can be reasoned into submission.

Grrrrrrrrr, so my car has a big ol scrape on the front bumper. It looks like I tried to turn to close to something white -- but I didn't. It wasn't like that when I came in, just went out to the parking lot here at work and there it was. I called to see if they could review the tape -- not until tomorrow. .:sigh:.
I can't keep the damn thing clean, or un-scathed, it seems. It's inevitable with any car, you get the 1 ding that starts it all. I had a dent on my old car from a woman in an SUV at an ATM, opened her door into the side of the probe, made a nice little dimple in the rear fender. She was parked between my car and the ATM, so I didn't see it until she drove off.

How do most people keep a pristine car? Not use it? I'm more practical then that, it doesn't really matter... doesn't effect how the car drives, it's a blemish that ruins the continuity, however.

I suppose some good news is I've gotten some positive feedback on the "shape theory".
Most would agree that it's an important part - that the person they're most happy with is a good fit physically as well as emotionally. I welcome anyone else's testimonials and/or exceptions to the theory, this is interesting =]

It pays to jump on tech opportunity -
As I was enjoying my MSN account today, going through the calendar and such; I realized that all the cool stuff is what they charge for. I've been receiving it free since about 3 years ago when they had a 6 month free initiative. You'd give your credit card info, it wouldn't be charged for 6 months... then at the end of that time they'd charge you for the remaining 6 months and you'd have a year's worth of internet access. Having no money at the time, I signed up. Wallet was stolen in the meanwhile... card was cancelled, and had to move shortly after. Without meaning to I had skipped town on paying my internet access bill.
I eventually paid them, but I didn't renew once the year was over. I didn't cancel either - but it kept working. Finally, 6 months down the road they confirmed they were shutting it off. They did... and since I never used it to dial up with, it didn't effect me. I suppose if I installed the "MSN explorer" it wouldn't work, but my email is still @msn.com and I get all the added content and features of MSN online. Yay!
It's a glorified hotmail account, I suppose... but let that be a lesson on the benefit of not paying your bills (the non-life threatening ones, at least). =]

I've been able to test XBox live 3 months before it was released, played with the prototype of the Palm Tungston (I can talk about it now, they haven't answered my requests to be in any subsequent beta tests), and I've been with the Windows beta since Win98. I haven't heard a word on Longhorn, so I guess that I'm out of that loop as well. I used to have a lot of time to work on bug reports, but suppose I didn't return as many as they wanted/required.

The opportunities are out there, have been since the very beginning (for me) when I was using Mosaic... then Netscape, and MS slapped the "IE" label on Mosaic. When all there was to do was email, gopher, and newsgroups, and the news gave me all the info I needed to find "the good stuff" on the newsgroups. They had flashed a "...binary.pictures." address as the background for their dynamic graphic opening for the story. Ahh, good ol responsible reporting =]

I get all nostalgic when I think of the 'old days' of the net. Sitting there for hours on end with my state of the art 486DX4 (100mhz!) and 28.8 Cardinal modem.
IRC and running an FTP over a 28.8, convincing people it's a slow ISDN line. =] Those were the days...

side note on the msn thing:: I actually just read that the calandar thing is exclusive to MSN8 as of a week or two from now... oh well, the 'explorer' application for MSN8 is far too intrusive for me to install at home, and it won't install on WinNT4 - so looks like I'm completely out of the loop (other then email) in a week or two

Small People in High Places are Funny S.P.I.H.P

I'm not short, which makes it all the more unusual when small people are at an elevated position. Their eyes are level, if not slightly higher then mine, usually.
I chuckle because they're so much higher then normal. I wonder if they're scared, because small people could fall and get hurt from those higher hights.
If you're a small person, be careful.
If you're a tall person who sees a small person in a tall place -- keep alert, those little suckers could tumble at any moment.

~ Thank You

post://200409807/

So I've been thinking up a theory here - just figured I'd throw it out there:

Shape. Physical and emotional (if you want to get all metaphorical).

You know how there are some people you just fit with? Be it laying down and cuddled - tangled in each other, or being able to sit together on the couch all snuggled up and watching a movie... or even something on a more intimate level. There are arms and ribs and bones and whatnot that need to fit into/around the other person to pull off a sucessful cuddle position. The ultimate test is the laying down snuggle (ie: spooning), you get an arm in the wrong place and you wake up with a jelly-like apendage soon to be awakened by the pins and needles of blood flow. On the intimate level, there are 3 basic shapes/angles for... those things, and it makes a difference how people fit together. A better fit, or a complimentary fit there-by results in a more pleasurable experience.
So those people who might say it doesn't matter - aren't completely correct. It is important to be complimentary - to be able to cuddle, snuggle, and even to be able to achieve the desired ends in an intimate situation (puggle, fuggle?).

It could also apply metaphorically, but it seems almost too obvious to bring up the fact that people have to be emotionally complimentary. That's already the main directive - the physical appearance is hopefully 2nd or 3rd to how well people get along. The actual fit of the puzzle pieces though... might that be the missing piece to the (stay with me now, it's really deep in the metaphorical pool here...) puzzle? (bum buum buuuuuuuuum)

So I try and get everything together last night, get my friend away from the usual element... but noooo she's already got plans -- but I'm not bitter! ...or at least I wouldn't be if anyone else had shown up :( I just kinda hung out, played some video games... it's been a busy week so I took the evening off - just staying home. Bryan stopped by later on, we played Enter the Matrix, got through a lot of it - I'm about the same place in the game with both characters. I got stuck with Ghost, but just have to steady my rifle hand and should get through the section. ;)

I was probably a pain - kept trying to line things up schedule wise which didn't match others, tried to accommodate the changes -- and then it's an outright denial of chilling. I'm going out tonight though, make my own plans dammit -- just as long as people are still coming out to Springfield to go bar hopping. I have fun on Worthington, there's just the underlying "anything's possible" scenario that always exists in Springfield. I don't drive when we go down there - don't want to park my car, but once I'm down there and wandering from place to place I'm all good.

I promised links yesterday - they're coming.

Nothing for the past few days, there's a few links - but those can wait for now. I'm just in one of those thinking while typing moods. I have one friend who's having issues at home, can't get ahold of her, and who in her last entry melodramatically noted she was contemplating ways to kill herself. She said her father made her show it to him when she printed it -- it was probably partially for his benefit, but you can't go writing shit like that. It makes people worried, and there's others that love you as you are... your father may not understand, but he's just scared that he'll lose touch with his own daughter because of his actions.
I just want to try and get her out of the house tonight and chilling with friends.

Tonight's movie night, got a few *ahem* pre-releases that I've de-coded from SVCD to DivX, all set to watch in the living room, with the new comphy couches, maybe some margaritas, and friends. I have so many people that I'd love to hang out with, but I can usually only hang out with them by myself. A lot of times I'll get lost in conversation with one person, completely losing the other people in the meanwhile. I'll assume a different stance with different people. With some, I'm the one who talks a lot, others I'm often the one listening. I'm not sure if I actually change personality, like when I'm around a girlfriend (I've been told), but I can feel others are disjointed in some situations, and I don't like anyone to be left out.

My goal with a party is to keep everyone occupied, provide enough people and they'll occupy themselves. I feel obligated to flutter a bit, but I settle down after a while. With small get-togethers I like a comfortable setting where everyone's a part of the discussion, or event (movie/videogames) and don't usually let someone sit out unless they're really insistent. I'm a host by nature, and even play the part of surrogate host at friend's parties - making sure no one's out of control, things are accounted for, and people know where the bathroom and/or waste-disposal areas are =]

Having multiple friends together in one place is a good thing. I focus on my real self, I'm a lot more conscious of my actions, and think how I'm interacting with people as a whole vs my normal one on one rapport. It's kind of a calibration of self.

After spending some time with Cathy I'm convinced a little both ways.
We spent most of the time we were hanging out at Newburry Comics just paroozing. Music, or posters, or little nicknacks would remind us of a story, and we'd banter back and forth on that subject. It was easy to talk... and we'd both trail off, losing our tain... to be reminded by the other person of what we were saying. There was so much that I wanted to say at a time, I'd often get on another subject before getting through the first -- and we'd both have to interject here and there for fear of losing the idea that was about to poof away forever. =]

She likes sports... quite a bit, it turns out. I didn't have much to offer along those lines, never really was one for sports - other then football. I can watch football. :] We went to eat at Chilli's - she offered to foot the bill because I drove out. I was impressed, never usually get that. I kicked in about a 3rd, I did spend a lot on gas... but was just impressed. I think I've only ever had one other person try and pay for my dinner.
She's young - 18, and where it doesn't really show, that's 3 full yeras before she can go to a bar.
I started this summer thinking about someone who I'd be able to go to bars with, made up my mind that I wasn't interested in anyone younger because it was an "inconvenience" but there's enough places that don't have an age limit... I guess. =}

She's so nice, and she really does seem like she'll do whatever she has to do to get what she wants. She's very determined, and though she said her grades weren't all that good this semester - she's in pre-med. She had a lot to say about drinking - like when she started at 16. I suppose I was 17, and almost going to college at that point, so it's not all that different. She likes drinking games, a plus, fun to go to parties with.

I had a really nice time with her, she seemed really happy to see me... and I was happy to see her. She's going off to GA soon, for a couple weeks... we'll see whats goin on when she gets back.

So yeah -- this one's in draft, probably for quite some time.

This weekend -- whew. It blew my mind.
I learned so much about Danielle -- realized I we had a lot in common.
She had a similar past (the whole 'goth stage' thing), her view on things like 'energy' within the universe.
She went off on it once when Caitlin was around, kind of took it back with a 'but that's stupid'.
A very kind person, vulnerable, but with determination to do what needs to be done.
I've never been complimented in such a way as to make me blush - and I in turn was able to return the complement without even a hesitation.
Again... I'm getting ahead of myself - I always jump right to the relationship stage as soon as I find someone who's eligible.
She doesn't have a car, needs to get on top of getting a licence - but she's done so much else.

I realize I like small women because I can feel strong, large, though not compared to some - certainly when I'm with a small woman.
I picked her up without hesitation, sweeping her up in my arms - and it felt good. I could tell she needed it, I needed it too... just to be in someone's arms, to identify with someone. Another scared person out in the world alone.

So this weekend was so... full of epiphany. Kind of.
I wouldn't say I made a new friend, per se... but I think I made one less enemy.
I really enjoy singing -- was jamming out with a band, just making up the song as I went, as they made up the music as we went along. It was so much fun! I've always tried to make my own music. Various attempts at instruments have fallen flat, though mixing has had decent results, it's only been after much deliberation and re-inventing. I partied it up with some great people, nothing but positive energy flowing =]
I always love when I'm chillin with Stefan and co.

I've noticed people are becoming more concious of cencoring themselves. Such is the life of those that choose to make their life public. It's slightly akin (though on a much smaller scale) to the celbrities always complaining about everyone knowing their personal life.
You can't write everything in your blog, much as you can't wear your heart on your sleeve. Not everyone will use pertinent information for good, that's just the way it goes. Oooh! Music tie-in as I'm listening to Til Tuesday - Voices Carry.

Where I can't say what I want to say, music can say it perfectly, even in part... and it will be wholy appropriate to recommend it, versus saying what I'd like to say =]
