So I've been thinking up a theory here - just figured I'd throw it out there:

Shape. Physical and emotional (if you want to get all metaphorical).

You know how there are some people you just fit with? Be it laying down and cuddled - tangled in each other, or being able to sit together on the couch all snuggled up and watching a movie... or even something on a more intimate level. There are arms and ribs and bones and whatnot that need to fit into/around the other person to pull off a sucessful cuddle position. The ultimate test is the laying down snuggle (ie: spooning), you get an arm in the wrong place and you wake up with a jelly-like apendage soon to be awakened by the pins and needles of blood flow. On the intimate level, there are 3 basic shapes/angles for... those things, and it makes a difference how people fit together. A better fit, or a complimentary fit there-by results in a more pleasurable experience.
So those people who might say it doesn't matter - aren't completely correct. It is important to be complimentary - to be able to cuddle, snuggle, and even to be able to achieve the desired ends in an intimate situation (puggle, fuggle?).

It could also apply metaphorically, but it seems almost too obvious to bring up the fact that people have to be emotionally complimentary. That's already the main directive - the physical appearance is hopefully 2nd or 3rd to how well people get along. The actual fit of the puzzle pieces though... might that be the missing piece to the (stay with me now, it's really deep in the metaphorical pool here...) puzzle? (bum buum buuuuuuuuum)
