Working in a call center I find this horribly funny, mainly because it's so plausible!

Scott McCloud's Inventions - also be sure to check out the unique comics, known more for their style then content.

Take a look at some of the permanant exibits of the Powerhouse Museum.

-= Showtune Style =-
I've got something to say:
I learned a new thing today.

I had thought I was fine,
that I knew this calendar of mine.

It turns out that was WROOOOOOOOOONG!
This calendar is much much more then that.
-= ( ( ( -=- ) ) ) =-

I thought I knew the calendar, I'm embarrassed to say I was wrong.
I thought the # of days went from 30 to 31 every other month because I never analyzed the rhyme. I heard the beginning of it and made the conclusion that February was the only exception, otherwise if a month had 30 days, the following was 31 - and so it went on down the line.

I only just made the inquiry to my co-workers that I thought it was curious that both July and August had 31 days. It turns out it was a conflict between Julius and Augustus. Augustus didn't want to be thought of as less of an Emperor so he took a day from February... and that was as much as I heard. I'm sure there's more that could be found in an encyclopedia.

So tonight ought to be called: Night of a Million Mews
(that's the working title)
I've had a kitten on reserve for a few months now, looks like the black one, currently.

I received a call first from Stefan:
"Tim's getting a kitten and they might have an extra, just seeing if you'd be looking for one."

Then a msg from Kristina:
K: "I have a question for you when you get a chance:
My ex just called me, can I have a cat in the house? He's really friendly, just hasn't been to the vet since I got him and pukes all the time"
J: "Well -- My kitty is moving in sometime after the first. I want to make sure everything is cool, and that she's feeling secure before I got bringing another cat into the house." (besides the no-shots thing)
K: "Well it wouldn't be for another few weeks, anyhow... and I'm not so sure about the Vet part"

Then most recently a call from Jamie:
Jamie: "I have a big favor to ask... my RA just found my kitten, I need to get rid of her :("
Josh: "Does he at least have his shots?"
Jamie: "No, he's got nothing"
Josh: "Well he can stay here for a bit, but he'd need all his shots first -- I don't want anything bad to happen to him"

duck hunt (unrelated, but fun)

So I think the lesson is here:
Don't have a cat @ college. They're great and all, but get a legal pet... cats are not silent and give themselves away. Do yourself and the cat a favor and find a good home right off -- don't take the chance of keeping it there @ college. Nicole and Caitlin had a similar experience.

...and get your cat all their shots. It may cost money, and you may be bound and determined that you won't have any issues, and that they'll stay inside all the time. What happens in an emergency, though... what if they get out then get in a tiff with a wild cat? Not good... and your kitty will be sad because of it. Please take care of your animals :)

Well I feel bad that I didn't get to go to the Cape this year. It's so nice there, so relaxing... and I didn't know the dates until the day before they told us we were getting laid off so I missed being able to put in for the vacation days. I just remember what a great time we had last year, and will just have to look ahead to next year.

Things are looking good for the 1st, have a few days leeway, so I can make sure everything is cleaned and get my room painted as well as clean the house top to bottom.

I'm still waiting to hear from the GAP -- I'm done here as of the 4th now, they're giving us an added day to avoid issues. Suits me just fine.
They called me last Sunday to come in and do orientation, couldn't as I was on my way to Boston to see Tori. Hopefully I'll get that over with asap so I can start working a few hours a few hours a week once I'm done here.
I'll only do about 10 hours or so, to try and keep it under $100 a week, though if it goes over -- it can extend my unemployment benefits further as it's one big pool to be taken from. Can last up to 52 weeks. Apparently MA is one of the best places to be unemployed, imagine that.

I found a site a few years ago, it was one of the first to use flash to sell a product. You were able to design your own shoes for about the price of a normal pair of Nikes.

I've purchased a few pairs myself, the latest of which being a black w/ silver stripe patent leather bowling shoe. Make your own running shoe, skater shoe, or boot with every little bit (think eyelets, stitching) being customizable - you design it, they build it. Then when anyone asks you where you got your shoes -- you can say you designed them.

Stefan's Party
I'll blame the beer, but damn if I didn't feel out of the loop. I was doing all well and good until everyone started partying hardy. I had drank about 6 or 7 beers -- and kept on drinking them as the night progressed. I wanted to get plastered... needed to keep my mind off of Danielle's new interest.
I learned the Stefan had had a similar run in, so I didn't feel so special.
It was a weight off my shoulders of sorts -- I was thinking Caitlin was all that was in the way, not true... she just wasn't all that interested.

I just felt like she didn't tell me the truth -- but I pressed. When I would come over, or she'd call me later on... it was like she wanted me there, and would more often -- but she'd always blame Caitlin. So she's telling Caitlin I'm always making advances, Caitlin thinks I'm a dirtbag because I am bugging her when she has made it clear that she's not interested.
I keep trying because she hasn't made it clear, in fact not totally opposite -- but she has shown interest to a degree.

Once Chris decided he wasn't going to CA -- all was decided, and rightly so - they're both gorgeous people, with similar mentalities. I'm happy for them, just somewhat miffed that there was a lot of turmoil. I acted differently towards others because of this. I didn't want to be a dirtbag, I wanted to go for something good, that just might have a chance -- but there was no chance, it only seemed as though there was.

My offer for massage was right out refused, rebuked by the gentlemen that had done already... I didn't -have- to, didn't care but the refusal was brute and hurt. I wasn't right for the rest of the night.
I slept on the couch, using my early morning departing for an excuse.

I was comfortable that she was taken, and then everything went all weird with the looks I got when I simply offered... being told earlier that evening that I gave good massages. I know I do, anyhow... so there was something else behind the refusal.

Caitlin and Danielle showed they were wary of me, that maybe I'd try something? On the contrary, but they don't know that -- which means they don't know the real me. Huh.

A while back I signed up for rollouts.com, forgot all about it. It's a sort of outsourcing company for techs. Computer upgrades for retail outlets (replacing cash register motherboards, warranty repairs/replacement) and odd jobs here and there.

On the way to Tori yesterday I received a call -- an emergency job involving Stop & Shop Deli machines (the touch screen to order meat/cheese). They'd been hit with the MSBlaster and needed everything updated. So I had him send me all the info, got up early - chose my jobs, and was on my way.
I went to Staples after checking out the wrong Stop & Shop (they'd already been updated... not a very good start) and picked up a nice little clipboard and screwdriver. It reminded me of when I used to read "hacking manuals" that would talk about attempting to get admin passwords and such - "Just walk in like you're supposed to be there with a clipboard and no one can stop you..."

I got in the groove, drove around all day store to store checking in with the store manager first -- then proceeding to the deli to dismantle the kiosk and plug in my keyboard to begin the updates.
The longest part was waiting for the 266MMX to reboot. A little slow but otherwise a normal NT machine. Kinda odd. I didn't receive half the curiosity that I expected, but a grocery store in the middle of the day isn't usually the place for tech-heads.

Normally I'm calling dispatch from customer service asking where the tech is -- now I was the tech calling to say I'd finished one and was now proceeding to the next. I got to be on the other end of the job - actually being out on the road, much as my father used to do for sales of welding supplies. I realize why he got home so tired every day. I was beat by the end, but felt good that I'd been out and about - driving, listening to music, and free of supervision and time delegation. Hell, mid-day I realized I passed 8000 miles and hopped into an empty Jiffy Lube for 10 min for an oil change. Then I grabbed some chicken from the deli and a peach for an impromptu lunch after I finished up at the next job.

It was good pay for 1 day - got 5 done, but who knows when I'll actually see it. I had some additional expenses, but was able to shop that evening with confidence. After finishing up one store close to home, I met up with my housemate and did some shopping @ Costco. Now we're set for a long time... on many things =]

A Day in Boston

I went to Boston today -- got an early start, picked everyone up and we were off! It was a long drive, saw a pretty big accident along the way on 90. At least 6 cars were involved and one ended up on top of 2 other cars... a big mess, everyone rubbernecking like mad.

We played tourist, took the T to Boston Common, followed the freedom trail, and go some good pictures of the cemetery and things in the area.
After a day of walking around, my sorrowful stomach (too much beer on Saturday) was finally ready for some grub. We hit Fire N Ice - a delightful establishment with friendly people, unlimited food, but with a rather high cost - $100 for the 4 of us, not bad for dinner in Boston ;)

You choose your ingredients: pasta, vegetables, all sorts of beef, chicken, pork, fish - choose your sauce - and it's all cooked up stir-fry style on a 10ft flat circular grill. A counter all around - the silent chef woman would take your bowl, make a line out of the ingredients on the grill and line it up next to the person to your right. A well-oiled machine, cooking OIL! HHAHAHAHA. *ahem* Anyways... it was delish! We got a pitcher of Sangria... being at the mercy of the females, but I must admit it was quite good.

We did so much walking, our dogs were barking in the metaphorical sense.
We got to the T - back to the bus station, and out to our shuttle stop just in time, caught the 2nd one - and were inside the gates right about the time Ben Folds started.

The Fleet Pavilion is out on the docks, full-score "is this one the water, or land" dock-age, full warf regalia. It's right on the water, yeah.
The skyline was gorgeous, and though it was right near the airport with the planes and the taking off and the whooshing... it wasn't really audible once surrounded by speakers. It couldn't have been a better day.

Ben Folds was silly - fun, and got the audience involved with some sing/harmony-a-long or two. I was very impressed with his pianist prowess - he talked more then Tori this time. She was oddly silent (all these years) and played quite a few older tunes. I can imagine she'd get sick of playing all the new stuff that everyone wanted to hear. I saw her less then a year ago and she's been touring steadily still.
I don't like that weird leaf-head thing though, it's on a few shirts and they had that as the backdrop for the lights and whatnot.

We were certainly exhausted by the time we made it out of there, and I must thank Rachel for driving... as I would have fallen asleep long before we arrived safely home.

So I think overall it went well last night -- I was understood, and he got some reasons. I know he can do it when he's determined and his horiscope for today seems as fitting as mine was yesterday ~

Leo: If certain projects or tasks have seemed difficult for you to finish, today's energy will give you the zip you need, dear Leo. The energy from the aspects that occurred yesterday is still very much present, and things will go well for you once you get started. It's a good time to meet with others to discuss business or other arrangements. Your communication and cooperation skills will be increased, and decisions can be made much quicker than usual.

-=-

I had people over at the time. He had been gone when I got home which was frustrating because I wanted to tell him as soon as possible. I didn't want to think about it any more... had done enough thinking all day, just rolling it over and over in my head. I was determined to be heard this time.

He came home while I was working with a friend on a website. We were going to get everything set up for Kate -- and get this show on the road... I had left a note for him to talk to me, so he came in as soon as he was done in his room.

He came in -- and thus began a full-force shouting match we had a louder then normal discussion, both with raised voices. I felt bad that everyone else was around and must have felt really uncomfortable. I knew what I needed to do, and did it. I felt 1000% better, having gotten all the things that he thought he was getting away with out on the table... giving the culmination of reasons which lead to my decision, and confirming the timeline - by the 1st.

Main reasons were offensive -- guess it's hearing the things that everyone says but can't find a way to tactfully hint at it, or maybe thats it -- it's been tactfully hinted at, but no one wants to be the one to put it into perspective... and I feel bad that now I'm the one that's hated because of it. It wasn't meant to be as such -- I just don't have the ability to help him out anymore.

I've had multiple inquiries regarding open rooms, and I'm going to take them up on it. I have much to do to get the place ready -- and having him out by the first is a must.

(oh... and that cat was outside this morning)

I had to ask a housemate to leave again last night. I need to be able to get the place ready for new people to move in, and can't do that with him there.
I started last night, I told him I'd need him out but he said he needed more time "to get a job". ~ Well, it hasn't happened yet, not likely going to happen any sooner the longer I let him stay, besides me having someone ready to fill the space who can actually pay for it.

Just need to "reinforce the timeline" this evening -- it's not my problem anymore.

He just doesn't seem to be taking this request seriously.

So I hadn't meant to get so in depth, but questions were asked regarding the immediate necessity of the room being empty. It was hard to recall previously noted points that "made all the difference" -- touched on a few, and that was enough. It was over with a racing heart and a large sigh.

He was upset. I know he understood though. We're civil, calmer now -- much better.
Time will tell.

I received some really good news today -- well, it was and it wasn't. It is good news for my friends, which is good news for me... and it couldn't be two better people. They have well-matched mentalities, both being very laid back and caring people.

I'm also happy cause there's no question now for me. I am getting better at taking a hint, but it's still difficult. It takes noticing things that aren't quite right and associating those with the opposite result then what you're going for. Taking a hint saves a lot of hurt trouble.

I know that there's someone out there -- can even name one off hand, but there are enough idiosyncracies that keep me looking. How can you tell a person that they're completely right for you, knowing that you get along so well, and complement eachother -- but that it's not right enough?
I'm still trying to figure that out. I might snap to my senses one day and realize I've had the answer right in front of me all along -- but that now it's too late.

I'm afraid I'll miss that one person, that I won't recognize exactly how good I could have had it until it's long gone. I worry if I get involved now, however... that it would be for the last time, and I don't want that yet.

In short -- I've done the same as was done to me. I feel bad for not laying it all out on the table, and so understand why it wasn't done for me. It's so hard to tell a person with that look in their eyes that you know, that you're not against it, but... no.

So yet again karma comes back around, dealing to me as I've dealt.

I felt like I was back in my groove today -- I didn't dread coming into work, since it was good to get away from the momentary stress at home. Besides, I just feel generally good, which helps -- unlike how it's been the past few days, dragging on and resenting everyone I have to call. I like it much better this way.

I grabbed a few issues when I got here - called the customers, called the dispatch, got everything squared away and told the whiners how it was going to be. I don't feel like taking guff today -- and I won't, I'm feeling too good for that.

K -- must ask Phil to move out at this point. I brought up the issue of money about halfway through the month. I told him he needs to be paid up in full -- the money he owes me from past, and the money ahead for that month. As of the first - you have 1 week to get a job, or you're out.

I've grown tired of the comments, the bitterness, the powerstruggles.

I don't want to create animosity -- it's bound to happen, but he'll get over it. I have others interested in the place, I think he's suspicious that something's up and he's scrambling for money. He called DET for an extension - 13 weeks.

News: Nachi is spreading, an anti-Blaster worm that patches up the vulnerability after getting in through the same hole and cleaning up after MSBlast.

The main question right now is if it preys on any other known windows vulnerability in the background, and the issue being that it's still getting in -- and restarts your computer as soon as it's downloaded and installed the patch.

** Faction Theory **

So here's my theory - cyberspace has always had the "bad guys" the |-|4X0Rz. Well, now is the time for the vigilantes to emerge. They reverse engineer the virus to undo what it's done and protect against it for the future. The only issue being that someone could get ahold of it and modify it further... but since it's only hitting unpatched, vulnerable computers... they're still better off getting the "fixing virus" instead of the "self-populating internet stomping virus" although this new one is still slowing systems by scanning random IPs at the indicated port(s).

I think the factions have started to appear, the black and the white, the good and the bad, the angels of darkness and light. There shall be a revolution, with people's parents and the dumb... protected by these cyberspace guardians.

Eh... maybe fiction, but it sounds cool -- now just to go underground with the Scrubs from Demolition Man. Oh, BTW -- did I mention that Demolition Man is one of the greatest movies ever? I have this thing with the future:
Back to the Future
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
Demolition Man
T2/T3

All of those are really good in showing what the future may be like... I'm all for that, and intrigued by any details they want to give.

I haven't gotten the site up yet, but it's coming, and it's awesome.
So keep your eyes peeled.

Remember Worms? If you loved it as much as I -- check out worms 3d.
Screenshots and progressions, oops galleries show the animation bugs... very very cool, I think all game companies should do that when producing a big title.
It gives you something to do while it's in the making, you tend to see what the issues are -- being patient in the meanwhile because you want it to be a finished product.

Very smart.

Well just waiting for an appointment with a client -- so updating a bit here and there. I just got back from Home Depot and boy do I feel productive!

I bought paint for my room, painting supplies, and blinds for the front of the house. We've had a nakked side window since we moved in... about time it's covered.

I've started moving things out of my room, making ready -- I've got a few volunteers to paint and will most likely take them up on that offer ;)
Hear that?

And now... a joke from Margaret:
A rich white man in Florida decided that he wanted to throw a party
and invited all of his buddies and neighbors. He also invited Leroy, the
only black guy in the neighborhood. He held the party around the pool in the backyard of his mansion. Everyone was having a good time drinking, dancing, eating shrimp, oysters and BBQ and flirting with the women. At the height of the party, the host said "I have a 10 foot man-eating alligator in my pool and I'll give a million dollars to anyone who has the balls to jump in."

The words were barely out of his mouth when there was a loud
splash and everyone turned around and saw Leroy in the pool! Leroy was fighting the gator and kicking its ass! Leroy was jabbing the gator in the eyes with his thumbs, throwing punches, doing all kinds of shit like head butts and chokeholds, biting the gator on the tail and flipping the gator through the air like some kind of Judo Instructor. The water was churning and splashing everywhere. Both Leroy and the gator were screaming and raising hell. Finally, Leroy strangled the gator and let it float to the top like a K-mart goldfish. Leroy then slowly climbed outof the pool. Everybody was just staring at him in disbelief. Finally the host says, "Well, Leroy, I reckon I owe you milloin dollars." "No, that's okay. That's really not what I want," said Leroy. The rich man said, "Man, I have to give you something. You won the bet.

How about half a million bucks then?" "No thanks," answered Leroy. The host said, "Come on, I insist on giving you something. That was amazing. How about a new Porsche and a Rolex and some stock options? " Again Leroy said no. Confused, the rich man asked, "Well, Leroy, then what do you want?"

Leroy said, "I want the name of the muthafucka who pushed me in the pool."

It took 3 long weeks -- but my skin is clear of the dreaded Poiz-N-Ivvy O Deth. My foot is all scarred up, some elsewhere too -- makes me wonder if it'll heal beyond that, but I didn't have any skin left on my foot that wasn't covered so it was expected, though the final kick in the keister were the few that budded up on the soles of my feet - ACK. I don't want to do that again -- wasn't fun, but I came out on top dammit! I have some good recomendations for fighting it in the future though:

This stuff didn't work, and I may have spread it worse while applying it.
Benadryl Poison Ivy/Oak anti-itch spray worked great
- you don't have to touch it, risk spreading it
Dermarest: Poison Ivy Mousse worked the best, and again with the no-touching and spreading.

I came accross a well written article via Slate regarding the lack of looting and crime related issues durring the blackout in American cities. Apparently it was chaos in 1977, the last time this happened in NY.

Of course it's a different story in Toronto, Canada.

I just got back from seeing Uptown Girls -- and I was surprised. You could count the male presence on one hand, and as I was the only one of a large group of girls I felt somewhat intimidated.

It was a delightful movie, they help eachother out, to understand what the other doesn't seem to see. I enjoyed myself, laughed a lot and though there may have been parts where I looked like I was crying -- it was all a ruse, if only for the record ;)

This band from the UK reminds me of her love interest in the movie -- the sexy singer who's full of bullshit about what he doesn't want to become, how he doesn't want to 'sell out'.

Go see it, if you like that sort of thing =]

My friend had an interesting question today: "How long does Nicotine stay in your system?" Apparently her father decided to get life insurance, which involves her getting a full test for nicotine and various other substances. (I'm guessing he's suspicious) I feel bad for the poor girl, she'll probably fail quite a few of the tests, especially nicotine. It wouldn't be the end of the world, I mean her mom knows she smokes, but she's been lying about things like that all her life so far -- keeping it a secret, mainly just from her father. Who knows what's going to happen, there's a potential threat of losing her new car... that would suck. I wish her the best of luck, and am looking up the Nicotine question as her computer got MSBlast-ed. HA.

I told her I can fix it for her - even if she doesn't have a legit version... it should still go to windows update. You can't get the SP1 Fix unless you're legit, but they still allow you to download the security updates. Before you can do that though, you have to disable MSBlast - but that shouldn't be an issue.

*update*: Pack a Day or less and the nicotine is out of your system in 24 hours, if you smoke a lot give it an extra day to be safe (easy for me to say as a non-smoker).
If anyone has a web link - I'd appreciate it. I wasn't able to find anything @ WebMD or Surgeongeneral.gov

I wrote this last night -- but was stuck in lofi and actually published this for like 5 secconds :] I cut but never pasted... lost in digital purgatory.

Phil: What would you call the space in-between stripes?
Josh: Purgatory?

I was rambling on about my current situation in regards to relationships. Danelle confuses me. She seems like she would really want me around, if Caitlin wasn't so posessive. She also plays it the other way to Caitlin, she's honestly under the impression that me even talking to Danielle, or calling her at odd times of the night... is completely unwanted. It's partially my fault for not being "careful enough" and allowing the evidence of the caller-id to be seen, but it's like there's more to it.

Caitlin really loves that girl, and maybe there's something to that. I have previous experience with a similar situation. Jess and Angie.
They were really close friends, always around eachother... then one party it all came out -- they were all excited, so glad no one really cared. They were talking about how they'd tell their parents... it certainly was strange. The poor girl (Angie) then got knocked up by some guy... and had to go get things taken care of and to go back home with daddy.
It was probably one of the saddest mini-dramas I've ever been witness too. It's the kind of thing that would draw ratings on MTV.

Caitlin won't let me get close, won't let us hang out with eachother because she knows how I feel due to that letter. What she doesn't know is how highly the letter was reguarded. I meant everything I said, but I don't like to play games, we're all big people here and can make our own decisions. I can see how it might rock the boat a little at first, but things happen... people get over it. If she doesn't think it's worth it enough to try... or if she's just biding her time. I figure I'll wait it out - but it might be time to see what I've had all along, someone who cares for me and who I ran away scared from once the whole 'long term committment' hit home.

Waiting on 2 things - back to school time, and being out of work... both those things will bring opportunity. I have a habit of rushing, thinking it's been a long time -- thats all it needs, is time. She'll be able to make things clear if she would like... I just feel if she really wanted to pursue anything, she would be trying much harder. I've pushed too much already, got myself in this position =]

I went to Radiohead last night -- took the day off from work, popped in to participate in the potluck. Stuffed my belly -- and off we went to the Tweeter Center.

I saw Phish there 2 years ago or so, so knew the venue -- it's quite easy to get to, short of traffic to and fro. The traffic did not disappoint me either, we should have headed out earlier then we did, but never-the-less we got there just as the lights were going out for Radiohead to take the stage.

We missed the first band, but don't even know who played -- wasn't anyone I had ever heard of. Found our seats but everyone was standing... and when in Rome: block the person's view behind you.

They played a lot of songs from the new album (Hail to the Thief):
2 + 2 = 5
The Gloaming
A Punch Up at a Wedding
Sit Down Stand Up
Where I End and You Begin

old favorites (OK Computer):
Paranoid Android
No Surprises

and my favorite (The Bends):
Fake Plastic Trees

The lightshow was as incredible as it was indescribable -- large pillars of light creating shapes in all different colors, with a spotlight overlay making similar psychedelic patterns and colors over it. There were screens to either side with sort of a live webcam look to them. Cameras positioned at the sides, above the singers head, and on the Titanium Powerbook running the show to the side would flicker about 1-2fps, moving about - floating over each other, sometimes leaving trails, or floating up to the top like the vsync was off on a TV.

Amazing... the use of color and pulsing lights to the beat... you could feel the music, the bass was some of the loudest and crispest I've ever heard.

I will see them again, oh yes... I will see them again.

I'm glad, the Gamecube had an excellent chip - lighting, shading, all top notch but to do more, they need the power behind it and Gamecube is cheapened. ATI is also really good at specialized hardware - and having a set platform to develop, very good news for ATI.

I just finished On The Roadicon by Jack Kerouac after recently picking it back up. I haven't really read much as of late. I'll read when I'm either too hot to move, it's really rainy and I make myself a little reading nest, or when I'm on the beach sunning myself. Other then that I usually can't sit still long enough.

It's a really good one, and if you haven't read it - I recommend it highly. It's about a few guys who keep postponing starting their life in the real world to go have their last adventure, and for some the adventure never ends...

Check out these EQ and SQ tests.
Then chart it out and see what kind of a brain/personality you have
(much quicker and straight forward then the eHarmony test)

I actually took the eharmony.com test once I got home (can't get there from work) and I was really impressed, it asked a lot of excellent, non-standard questions.

post://106079744166807052/

I was waiting around today at the dealership -- car was getting fixed up, some scratches being buffed, rattles addressed. I was just watching TV for a while, then made a comment about the "windows bug" just making it to TV when they had the patch released since July.

That turned out to be a conversation starter. The older man next to me agreed, and so it began... he spoke of computers, what he had, and that got in to the computers of yesteryear.

It turns out he was a programmer -- before COBOL, even before FORTRAN!
He used to program the IBM mainframes which required punch cards. If the program was too long, you had to make 2 programs out of it, the 2nd program containing about 80% of repeated code/lines that were needed if you had to split it. The compiling and testing involved going to IBM headquarters where the only compiler would translate the punch cards into tape which would be the working copy of the program that was required.
I was fascinated.

We were watching CNBC so every once and a while a tidbit would come on and we would speak of that -- unemployment got us to my situation. I am soon to be out of work and just looking for something to support it.

It turns out his son teaches at a local VocTech school where he teaches the kids what they need to go out in the real world and get jobs. While writing the lessons and curriculum that would result in them learning actual marketable skills to go to local companies in the area. He spoke to the businesses, found what they want for requirements -- and built the program around that.
Smartest damn thing I ever heard of. No 'stuck in a rut' computer teacher stuck in the 80s - I'm very hopeful for those kids.

His daughter is a programmer - started with COBOL, did that for a while, but has since gone down to some printing company in CT where she does COBOL for their printing presses/machines, mainly the printing queue -- all done in COBOL.

He is retired himself, but does career counseling -- imagine that.
Business manger is the position he spoke of that really perked me up. They have to be a programmer, they have to be a customer, they have to be a marketing strategist to put together the needs of the customer, analyze them, and know what the programmers are capable of. They then write the outline which will be the program.

He also had something to say about me wanting to start my own business. He must hear it all the time because he said most aren't even entrepreneurial, and even after failing their evaluation/test many still attempt it. There are certain traits one must posses in order to be a successful business owner.

I can't honestly say I'm sure my father had that. He did have his own business, which eventually he sold for a little more then he owed, and honorably bowed out. This was only following years where he might not take his pay here and there if things were tight enough, only making it tighter at home, but that's another tangent...

In short -- he was saying I need to really evaluate my options as it's easy to say you want your own business, but where's your plan?

What are you going to offer?
Who are you going to offer it to?
Once you're past your current customer base (friends/relatives) how will you get more?
How will you get people into your store?
How will you make a marketable item that everyone wants?
There are so many consultants, system builders, etc - out there, so how can you differentiate your product/service from others?

His best advice was to find a current position with a large company, work on my skills, get my certifications and degrees... and once I have proven that I can do this thing, consulting, systems... that I'll have enough of a background to show others that I'm their man, I'm the qualified technician that they've been looking for.

I really took all of it to heart, and the conversation made the 3 hours or so that I was waiting, seem like an answer. There's so much on my mind of late, I wonder what I am to do...

If I can make a few systems here and there on order -- wonderful, but it (probably) can't be anything more then here and there unless it either a) takes off or b) I get some qualifications and someone else's marketing.

The party for Heather and Jon started about 4 or so, I arrived shortly after 5 - just as the food was being prepared. I met Greg's new girlfriend - a good of a reason as any to become Mormon, I suppose. Everyone was already getting started on the drink as well -- most had rather red faces when I arrived.

The food was fantastic, their parties are always amazing for that.

Shortly after I arrived, there was word of a bird... in the basement.
I crept down with Jon, sure enough -- hiding in the corner, fluttering here and there was a very long beaked bird. No idea how he got in there, but he flew to one side of the room, and I stepped closer towards him. I was about halfway there when he flew back towards me. I ducked and he did too... he landed on my back. He tried crawling up my shoulder but I wasn't letting a wild bird near my head... just in case. I started walking up the stairs - he hung on, flapping but holding on my shirt with his feet. I got into the mudroom, closed the door behind me. He kept trying to fly to the door on the left, but the door on the right was open. He was flapping, trying to stay up so I put my hand under him and he perched on my finger. He wouldn't turn around so I turned rather quickly and showed him the door. He flew and took a perch up in the tree.

He didn't get mad at me, didn't peck and didn't squawk.
"Bird Man of Alcatraz" came to mind, and was mentioned by a few, "Dr Doolittle", a few others =] It's all good, I love the little animals.

Besides that the night was a wondrous cacophony of drinking, scooting, and we topped it off with the hot tub at the end of the evening.
Check out the pictures:

Everything was chill as usual at Stefan's.
The band played for a while, at least until it got late. I had left right from work to get there in time. The keg of steel rail ale was already flowing as were the red headed sluts, but people were still getting there so all was good.
A very nice evening with the usual peeps - stretched until early morning.
It was a blast -- and Caitlin and Danielle get the prize for best present (no one really brought anything, but they made him up a goodie back of party hats, a customized lighter, and his fav: peanut butter cups).

I'm a bit more optimistic. It seems Anthony is still in possession of the laptop, or the XBox.

He was last seen near RT 91/Longhill Rd in Springfield on a 10 speed with a rectangular shoulder bag. My friend saw him, attempted to follow -- but lost him in traffic. He called me right after, and I in turn called the police. I spoke with the detectives' secretary, who took down my info and said they'd call me back.

The video game store that he probably sold the XBox/games @ is ActionPak on Belmont St.

...and good news regarding GAP - I called and spoke to the manager. She said I was "all set" but that she couldn't give me a call to confirm until they had a date for orientation.
So there is certainly hope, there's a lot of people on my side with this... I've had a lot of support and help, and I really appreciate it.
I don't feel so alone, don't feel like this is quite all for naught... and maybe karma will show itself by the good I've given coming back to me.

Well I don't think I got the job @ GAP -- The manager said she'd be giving me a call after the 1st, she was going to bring it up at the next weeks meeting. I called today to follow up and that particular manager wasn't there, my name didn't even seem to ring a bell with the other manager so it's the combination of no call, and lack of recognition that lead me to believe that I did not el scoro con el gap-o.

My friend's interview went well though, she's going to be working at Fusion, or some cool sounding club/restaurant thing. I'm picturing "Bada-bing" without the dancing girls... well... it sounds ritzy ;)
She popped over today before heading out - lookin all spiffy in her "Tiffanys'" necklace... all bling bling, she's so funny. ;)

I'm back to burning rage mode.
.:sigh:.

I went home on lunch, just to check the place out -- of course I left my house keys inside. So I could only walk around outside.
I examined the window, found a stool on the side of the house... it had been dragged from the back yard to the point of entry. The screen's locks were broken at the bottom, metal brace pulled away and the lock popped.

I feel like anything could happen now... at any time. I'm upset that I can't allow a breeze to flow through durring the day while I'm at work. I'm angry that I don't feel safe, that one person can violate my home, and that I can't get back at them. I worry that he might come back in some crazed state, armed and looking for more.

I want to shake him violently, somehow make him feel worse then he's made me feel -- make him realize what he's done... but it's nothing to him, I'm not his friend. He only took 1 game from his friend.

Oh I can take the philosophical view that he'll get it coming back to him, but that doesn't get him out of the area, doesn't stop him from wanting to come back. If there's one thing I've learned thus far -- it's that they always come back.

I'm just so wound up, I don't need much to snap. (grr)

Lots on my mind = lots of entries.

This is a test -- can I live in the gritty world of rap? Can I know street cred being so after the fact -- coming to it, not growing up in it. I want this to play out -- to prove one way or another if worst case will happen or not. I need to know if I can make it, if I can learn anything that would help others. Can a person raised in the woods make it in the city with the hoodlums?
Should I just run away before I lose more?

So maybe on a slighty more upbeat note, a few of my friends went to Phish this weekend -- as always, a grand ol time.

This guy is receiving the ultimate publicity -- eBay banned sales of the artist's "Axis of Weasels" playing cards.

Heard of "Flash Mobbing"? Yeah, I got the 411. I'm jiggy with it.

Wow, here's a new and original idea for a game.

A few friends are going to check out the local pawn shops, see if anything might have popped up while I'm stuck here at work. Chances are no one would receive it because it's such a hefty machine.
Anyone coming to trade it in on a bike -- probably shouldn't have it.
I would certainly love to find it, but I'm not overly optimistic at this point.

It's better that two of my female friends are going to check it out too -- because then they wouldn't suspect anything, and they're really good at using their charm.

Also found out what part the little weazel hangs out in: Longhill - one of the seediest areas of Southend Springfield.

I'm a schmuck, a fucking schmuck.

Do I need to come off as an asshole to make it in this world? If I'm a civilized human being will it continue to make me a target? It sure seems it, I must have a big shiny "shmuck" light popping up over my head.

I suppose it's my fault for living in a city. You have an increased element of crime, but as of late it seems things have been getting desperate for the street urchins.

Trust has always been my downfall, time after time I look back and kick myself. Phil "can't believe he'd do that?!!" but it's not him anymore, it's a rat hitting a feeder bar -- except the feeder bar takes a hell of a lot more effort and involves hopping out of my house with my laptop & XBox. He took the games before, but this time came back for the XBox -- and the 2 new games I picked up yesterday along with the DVD Player/Remote.

He must have been watching... waiting for people to leave, for my light to go out. If someone had in fact slept on the couch -- it wouldn't have happened. I should have, if only I had a seccond chance.

I suppose there's more hope for my laptop then the XBox -- @ $2200 a year ago, that's going to be the tougher of the two to replace. We got the serial number, I called Toshiba to report it stolen... and the police say they'll call all the pawn shops in the area to be sure it's not sold. Maybe there's a chance that he'd sell it to a store -- might have a shot, then - but it's a big ticket item, and no crack head's going to give him what it's worth... so maybe he'll be just that dumb, I hope.

Anthony Rivera - you are my arch nemesis. I will see to your downfall!

So I figure there's not much goin on this evening... and then there's the whole thing that everyone planned for tonight.
I'm going to get to the club late -- that's OK.
I'm getting my outfit delivered so I can leave right from here.

It's been a while, I wonder if I can get in the groove.

Laura joined me for a drive around, we caught Danielle getting out of work when we popped in so we decided to make a day of it. We played some mini-golf, after driving for quite a while -- just enjoying being out in the nice weather. It was a tad swealtering for a while, almost thunderstormed - was just about to let it rip when all the clouds dissapated. It saved our game of mini-golf.

We went to the backwoods course in Southwick/Westfield. It was not very good, and I was thinking of adding various things to do around WesternMA like mini-golf - with maps, locations, and the general rating of said amusement. More and more people are finding me via the Masslive Western MA Weblogs listing, so would be a nice service to the locals... if they're not already aware of these establishements.

feedback - live feedback

So far I've got for mini-golf:

Agawam - Twin Silos: 4 out of 5
Southwick: 2 out of 5
Wilbraham - Fenway: 1 out of 5*

(* - third party rating, I've yet to personally play the new course)

So I got out of work early yesterday, did a lot of running around -- really feel like I got something done. Partied it up with some drinking games later on... passed out on the couch. ;) It was a good night.

I woke up fairly early (for a saturday) and was just chillin when Laura popped up. We had a really long in-depth discussion, brought up a lot of stuff that was bothering both of us, just to get it out and said. Nothing between us, just about other goings on... and believe I've gotten to a rather large root.

Listen to this tune for an apt description of the issue(s):
Jack Johnson - Wasting Time

I'm gonna go for a drive.

Why not buy some movies and music while the gettin' is hot -- $4 off every DVD, VHS, & CD!

A rather interesting spin on the conservative right and what it all boils down to.
